Leak Down Test

Leak down test

Built with about $20 worth of parts from Homedepot you can buy them for a lot more but figured this would help the diy people.

Only use a hand pump or you will blow out seals.

- Use the cap to test tester for leaks.

- Block plug hole, power valve vent, exhaust port and intake

-Pump to 6 psi do not go much over that.

-Time for 5 minutes will usually only drop a couple psi if everything is good.

-If drops to zero or won't pump up find leak. Left cank seal can be checked by spraying with soapy water and right side can be checked by plugging the case vent and if pressure drop stops then its leaking in transmission area. Other areas like gaskets can be checked with soapy water and head oring can be checked by plugging where the radiator hoses connect .

This should be done to help diagnose bikes with running issues. I also do it before taking a motor apart to see if there is anything they may need special attention during the rebuild process.
